The World Affairs Challenge (WAC) is an ideas competition that is held annually for middle and high school students. Students organize into teams under the guidance of a sponsoring teacher and work on solutions to a global challenge that WAC posits each year.

WAC's vision is that every student will develop awareness, understanding and engage in global issues in a way that leads to positive action in the world.

WAC's mission, through a collaborative problem solving process, is to develop tomorrow’s global leaders.

WAC's goal is to engage middle and high school students in global issues through research, collaborative learning, meaningful community service and exciting interactive competition.

Volunteer Opportunity

Technology Assistant

Description: The World Affairs Challenge is dedicated to engaging students in learning about the world. WAC seeks a dynamic, driven individual to serve as a Technology Intern for the winter semester in preparation for the annual event taking place on March 2nd, 2019 in Denver.

The intern will assist the WAC staff and CTIR Board with the following tasks as requested. • Lend expertise to build WAC marketing materials, both print and video • Assist in the design of technology tools for WAC participant use • Assist with updates to the WAC website • Assist with updates and usage of the WAC App • Troubleshoot tech issues for WAC participants


Requirements for volunteers: The ideal candidate will: • Be articulate, gracious and professional • Have basic proficiency with Squarespace, Salesforce, and video editing programs • Have excellent attention to detail • Be self-directed and conscientious • Be interested in global education and young people

Internship Parameters: • 5-10 hours per week, as needed. Hours may increase as event date nears. • Access to computer to work with shared files on a Google Drive • Proficiency in web design, APP use and design, Salesforce or other data management, and video editing software.

Social Media & Marketing Intern

Description: The World Affairs Challenge is dedicated to engaging students in learning about the world. WAC seeks a dynamic, driven individual to serve as a Social Media & Marketing Intern for the winter semester in preparation for the annual event taking place on March 2nd, 2019 in Denver.

The intern will assist the WAC staff and CTIR Board with the following tasks as requested:

• Maintain a WAC presence on Twitter, Instagram, Facebook, and other social media platforms as assigned by the Board • Collect input from WAC staff to refine and post on social media accounts • Reach out for new followers on social media by engaging with current followers • Help design marketing materials for WAC (media and print) • Outreach to media sources for press releases regarding WAC program and participants • Assist WAC staff in editing and posting web and social media content.


Requirements for volunteers: The ideal candidate will: • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills • Take initiative with direction • Be comfortable with current social media platforms such as Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, LinkedIn • Professionally follow up and keep track of progress according to stated outcomes • Be interested in global education and young people.

Mentorship Coordinator

Description: The World Affairs Challenge is dedicated to engaging students in learning about the world. WAC seeks a dynamic, driven individual to serve as a Mentorship Intern for the winter semester in preparation for the annual event taking place on March 2nd, 2019 in Denver.

The intern will assist the WAC staff and CTIR Board with the following tasks as requested.

• Recruit qualified individuals from around the state to mentor teams in various fields of Global Issues • Establish which WAC teams require a mentor, and in what field • Match teams and mentors and help coordinate their meetup times • Assist with Mentor trainings • Act as liaison between teams and mentors


Requirements for volunteers: The ideal candidate will: • Be articulate, gracious and professional • Be comfortable speaking on the phone • Be comfortable leading small groups in trainings • Have excellent attention to detail • Be self-directed and conscientious • Have basic proficiency with various spreadsheet programs • Be interested in global education and young people

Internship Parameters: • 10 hours per week, as needed. Hours may decrease after the new year. • Access to computer to work with shared files on a Google Drive.

Administrative Support Intern

Description: The World Affairs Challenge is dedicated to engaging students in learning about the world. WAC seeks a dynamic, driven individual to serve as an Administrative Intern for the winter semester in preparation for the annual event taking place on March 2nd, 2019 in Denver.

The intern will assist the WAC staff and CTIR Board with the following tasks as requested.

• Triage Incoming calls & contacts to appropriate WAC staff or board members • Assist with data entry using Salesforce and Google Drive • Assist in coordinating new WAC Community Partners • Recruit and coordinate event day volunteers • Make name tags for participants, judges, teachers, speakers, etc. • Assemble info packets for teachers, judges, & proctors for event


Requirements for volunteers: The ideal candidate will: • Be articulate, gracious and professional • Have excellent attention to detail • Be self-directed and conscientious • Have basic proficiency with various spreadsheet programs, including Excel, Google Sheets and Salesforce • Be interested in global education and young people

Internship Parameters: • 10+ hours per week, as needed. Hours may increase as event date nears. • Access to computer to work with shared files on a Google Drive • Competency in using Salesforce, Microsoft WORD, Microsoft Office, and Google Apps.
